Essential Guidelines to Trout Fishing
Aah fishing! One of our favorite past times. And what better to fish for than trout.
When planning your fishing trip, finding where fish are is always the first goal- so you need to know where to look for trout.
Where Trout Can Be Found
1. North America
The streams and lakes that are flowing with clear and cool fresh waters.
2. Europe and northern Asia.
3. The Ocean
Some trout can be found in salt water. They spawn in the same way as salmon, beginning their life in fresh water, moving to salt water for their adult life, and then returning to the same fresh water where they were originally hatched. This behavior can be found in steelheads as well as brown, bull, cutthroat, brook, and Arctic char.
Trout Species
So how many different species of trout do you think there are? Most people will say “a lot.” They may be correct, as we have many names for all the different types of trout that we know. However, genetic scientists have determined that many trout are really the same. In other words, they have the same genetics.
The reason they may have different colors or patterns on their bodies is because of their environment. Living in different environments has caused the same genetic fish with different coloring and patterns to have acquired different names because they look different. For example, you may thing that the Colorado River cutthroat trout and the Yellowstone cutthroat trout are not the same because they look different due to their environment. But check the genetics and you will find they are the same fish.
So these differences in colors and patterns can result in two fish with the same genetics being called entirely different names. Another example is the aurora trout and the brook trout. They appear to be very different because they both have different physical and color characteristics. Again, they are the same species of trout genetically.
Trout Characteristics
Trout are one of the species that relies on camouflage. Depending on their surroundings, they will adapt their coloring and patterns to blend in to that particular environment. This adaptation is one of the things that makes them so difficult to find.
However, when they first move to a different habitat, they will not blend in with the other trout in the area. Give them a little time, though, and they will change so that they fit right in!
The fins on a trout have no spines. This fatty type fin is along the back of the trout, close to the tail.
Trout are actually a very bony fish. However, the fleshy part of the fish is so good to eat that dealing with the bones is usually not an issue.
Trout Bait
Although different species of trout prefer different types of bait, you can expect that any trout will take to a soft-bodied aquatic invertebrate. Examples of these would be the mayfly, stonefly, caddis fly and even worms and nightcrawlers. Larger trout may feed on smaller fish such as a minnow.
Trout Fish Farms
Because trout fishing is so popular, you will find that many have been raised on a fish farm or hatchery. Once they are of the correct size, they will then be relocated to a popular fishing site. This allows the supply of trout to be replenished and will minimize over fishing. Mostly lakes are stocked with farmed trout, but you may also find your fresh water stream has been stocked, too. At any rate, this fish farming and restocking assures that you will always have plenty of trout for catching.
